Canady-Vieira Hybrid Plasma Scalpel (Griff) pen, manufactured by WEM Equipamentos Eletrônicos and sold in American market by US Medical Innovations, a company’s partner in that country, was addressed in an interview transmitted by 9News, a traditional television network of the United States, on last September 21.

Such interview was given in television broadcasting station studios in Washington by Dr. Craig Thomas to the talk show host of the channel. During the conversation, the surgeon disclosed a golf tournament that had the purpose of raising funds for the hospital where he works at. Then, he described a recent latest state of innovation in use in hospital’s surgical unit: Canady-Vieira Hybrid Plasma Scalpel (Griff) pen, which allows low levels of bleeding, achieved due to electrosurgical unit that cuts and coagulates at the same time, using argon gas.

This equipment, developed by WEM in 2011, is being sold since the first semester of 2012 in the United States only, where its registration with FDA was quickly granted, with encouraging results. “In Brazil, pen approval has just been homologated by Anvisa [National Agency for Sanitary Surveillance] and the device shall be commercialized soon in national market, also providing safer surgeries with a decreased recovery time for the patient”, explains Edson Vieira, WEM director.
